EZ Agency NewslettersAbout 7 years ago, Michael McLean (the Canadian Insurance Marketing guru) challenged me to start doing a monthly paper newsletter. I took this challenge to heart and never looked back. I implemented my agency newsletter a few months later and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Why? Well first it increased the referrals we were getting into the agency. For some reason when I keep in touch with my clients, they seem to remember me and tell their friends about me. Odd how that works. I also used a section of the newsletter to showcase everyone that sent me a referral along with the winner of the referral contest.

People love to be recognized and doing so had the additional impact of making them more excited about the referral program and thus they referred more folks. Then I started to notice my retention was going up. People were reading the newsletter and talking about us. They started seeing us as their local agent not some faceless corporation. They wanted to stay with us, this all led to the newsletter more than paying for itself.

But the “Coup de gras” was our cross sales started going up as well. Each month I include an insert where I talk about a different line of business, usually something other than our main bread and butter (home and auto) such as Umbrella, Flood, or Earthquake or occasionally just a general call to action if we don’t have all your insurance. Guess what? People call, fax, email and hit our website to get quotes.

Of course I’m sure your first objection is, “I’d love to do this Russ but it takes time. “ Well, you are right, it takes a lot of time and effort to do it right but guess what, I do all the work and you get all the reward.

You see a few years back as Tom and I started teaching and coaching more agents, newsletters kept coming up.
